Keynote Speech

Human-centric design of process-aware information systems

Process-aware information systems (e.g. business process management systems, workflow systems, case handling systems, enterprise information systems) are increasingly used in organizations. They are introduced to streamline and improve business processes in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. Often, these systems replace humans by (partially) automating their tasks, or by coordinating and distributing the work. Consequently, the tasks and activities of employees in the process change, potentially leading to boring and monotonous work. In this keynote, I will look into the impact a process-aware information system may have on the organization and take a human-centric focus on the development and (re)design of process-aware information systems. I will, amongst other topics, present recent work on how an employee's perception of the work may be improved by simple adaptations of the system and discuss further ideas for human-centric design of process-aware information systems.
